When exploring your garden room options, you'll quickly realise that most have an overall height of 2.5m. This is due to Permitted Development rules, which allow 2.5m high buildings greater flexibility in positioning within your garden. However, if you plan to use your garden building as a home gym, you'll likely want to maximise the ceiling height. This extra height ensures comfort when using treadmills, exercise bikes, and cross trainers, without the worry of hitting your head.
Working with a bespoke garden room designer, such as Kent-based Ark Design Build, allows you to explore taller garden room options. Although a taller building requires planning permission, Ark Design Build seamlessly handles this process as part of their comprehensive turnkey service for clients.
Take, for example, this recent garden gym with hidden storage project in Maidstone – a perfect illustration of how they customise the size, layout, and finishes based on each client's specific needs.
6m x 3m Garden Gym
This tailor-made design occupies a 6m x 3m footprint. The gym building's total height is 3m, offering an increased floor-to-ceiling height inside. A partition wall divides the building into two distinct areas: the main exercise space, which also includes a custom plywood desk for dual use as a home office, and a separate storage room with external access through a secret door that seamlessly blends with the wall cladding.
Black Thermowood Exterior Cladding
The gym building's exterior is clad in black-stained Thermowood to match the colour of the door and window frames. Thermowood, a softwood timber treated at high temperatures for enhanced durability, offers a long lifespan. As the photos demonstrate, the black finish strikingly contrasts with the garden's natural green hues.
Thermowood & Plywood Interior
Inside, Ark Design Build and their clients have crafted a unique aesthetic. The same black Thermowood cladding from the exterior is used internally, complemented by naturally finished plywood. The contrast between the two colours and textures is particularly striking.
Specialist rubber matting, ideal for gym use, covers the floor to help reduce impact during workouts.
As mentioned, the gym also serves as an office space. At one end of the room, a custom-made plywood desk sits beneath a large picture window, offering a pleasant workstation with views of the garden.
In their turnkey service, Ark Design Build tailors the electrical specification to the intended use. Unlike many competitors who charge extra for a hardwired internet connection between the office and house, Ark Design Build includes this in their quoted price. This service encompasses the cost of their electrician running armoured cabling between the garden room and the house and connecting it to your main electrical system.
