If you live in the South West of England and are looking for a well-specified contemporary garden room design, you should explore the work of Bristol-based Little Green Rooms.
For us, Little Green Rooms stands out in the market since the sustainability of their buildings is a top priority. Each material in the multi-layer build-up has been chosen for its low-impact eco credentials. The combination results in a room that will be comfortable to use all year round and have a long, low-maintenance lifespan. They also won't cost the earth to run.
The mix of materials and the way they have been detailed also creates a garden room with a striking aesthetic, as these photos show.
Over the years, we have seen several companies tag their designs with the word eco, but few of them have really considered each material choice in the way the Little Green Rooms team have.
The Cube and The Workroom
Little Green Rooms offer two styles of garden room The Cube and The Workroom.
The Cube is designed for one person to work comfortably and has an external footprint of 2.7m x 2.7m.
True to its name, The Cube has a strong cubist form. A single outward opening door is positioned on the front elevation with a full-height picture window on the side wall. The doors and windows are manufactured in Cornwall from FSC-certified timbers and glazed with double-glazed units.
Millboard, a UK-made composite cladding material, has been used to detail the exterior walls, fascias and soffits. We have used Millboard here at Garden Room HQ and can attest to what a nice finish it is. The boards have a natural wood grain texture and look as good in reality as they do in these photos.
The Workroom features a wide glazing section on the front elevation, creating a lovely connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The way the glazing has been recessed with the Millboard cladding framing it is very attractive.
The Workroom comes in 5 sizes from an external footprint of 2.3m x 2.5m up to 4m x 2.5m. Prices for The Workroom range start at £13,950.
Topped off with a sedum roof
All Little Green Rooms are finished with a sedum roof covering fitted over a highly durable EPDM membrane. Sedum roof coverings look attractive, particularly when viewed from an upstairs window. They also add an additional layer of thermal performance and create a natural habitat for insects and birds.
British sheep's wool insulation
Each of the Little Green Rooms ranges is insulated with British sheep's wool insulation, ensuring the room is warm in winter and cool in summer. Sheep's wool insulation allows a building to breathe, and it offers better thermal values than some other types of synthetic insulation.
You can also choose wool for the floor covering of your Little Green Room. You have a choice between a 100% wool carpet or engineered oak for the flooring.
The walls and ceiling are finished in FSC-certified plywood, which is then painted in your choice of Farrow & Ball colour.
As standard, Little Green Rooms come complete with track spot lighting and three double power points. The electrical package also includes a wall-mounted panel heater, which you can control over wi-fi.
You just need your electrician to run the power between your new garden room and your house.
Complete with curtains
A nice touch is that each Little Green Room comes complete with handmade thermal curtains. It always surprises us that with the trend for large expanses of glazing, more garden room ranges don't have the option of curtains.
As well insulated as garden rooms are and finished with double glazing, you are still going to lose heat out of big windows. It makes sense to incorporate curtains as part of the design. This is especially important with energy costs as they are.
It seems to us, that the Little Green Rooms team have given a lot of thought to each aspect of the design and the useability of their garden rooms.
