Designing a garden room within a compact garden, is a delicate balancing act. The goal is to design a building that is functional without overwhelming the garden. To strike this balance, it's good idea to work with a designer who can think beyond the traditional garden room designs. A Room in the Garden is a company that can achieve this harmony, as this project shows.
A Room in the Garden's client sought to transform a modest seating area into a year-round sitting room and office space. While the garden itself was quite small, the A Room in the Garden design team saw it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. By implementing an angled building, they were able to create a room that boasts more internal space than a conventional rectangular design might offer, without encroaching on the garden's overall space.
Innovative Design for Limited Space
Faced with a design brief to create a spacious building that serves multiple uses within the confines of a small garden. A Room in the Garden decided upon a bespoke building with an angled front wall. This unique design enabled more interior space than a traditional rectangular structure might have offered in the space, without sacrificing precious garden real estate. The resulting design is a spacious and inviting garden room with a footprint of 36.92 square meters.
A Room in the Garden has always excelled in thinking outside the box, particularly when it comes to utilising available space. This project showcased their expertise in optimising space, demonstrating that limitations can often be the catalyst for creativity.
A Seamless Connection between indoor and outdoor spaces
At the heart of this project is a desire to establish a year-round connection between the indoor and the outdoor spaces. With large Crittall-style sliding doors on the angled front elevation, A Room in the Garden have managed to create a seamless connection between the workspace & sitting room and the established garden. The angled wall and feature glazing, coupled with a stylish canopy and wall cheek detail, create a welcoming entrance and makes the garden room a visual focal point from the main house.
Modern Aesthetics Meet Tradition
The exterior of the garden room has a modern aesthetic with its Western Red Cedar cladding, fixed vertically, interspersed with stylish charred timber inserts. This method of charring timber, known as shou sugi ban, is a Japanese technique that lends an appealing contrast to the Western Red Cedar. The charred timber harmoniously ties in with the black powder-coated aluminium door frames, fascias, and exterior light fittings, complementing the contemporary design.
Thoughtfully Zoned Spaces
The floor plan reveals careful consideration for the room's division into a workspace and a sitting room. A Room in the Garden’s client has successfully created a professional working environment bathed in natural light, thanks to the roof skylight and a desk-height window.
The wider end of the room houses the relaxation area, which has a spacious ambience, perfect for enjoying the garden all year round. The large sliding doors further enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the Crittall-style glazing adds an extra dash of character.
High-Quality Interior Finishes
The interior of the garden room is finished to a high standard, featuring plastered and decorated walls and ceiling, along with wooden flooring. This combination gives the room a polished, professional look, making it an ideal extension to the main house's living space. The overall cost of this project was £52,000.

This service covers all stages of the build, from installing the foundation to the final electrical connection between the garden room and the house. The A Room in the Garden team is equipped to overcome site challenges to construct their rooms. For instance, this project had no rear access to the garden. This meant all the materials had to be transported over the fence and into the garden. Given the size and specification of the garden room, that was a substantial amount of materials!
