Over the years, we've showcased a variety of garden gyms and exercise studios, custom-built for personal trainers, yoga, and Pilates instructors at their homes. These tailor-made spaces offer the chance to be deeply involved in the design process, enabling a perfect fit for both your and your clients' needs. This home Pilates studio by Rustic Realities is a prime example of a collaborative effort between a garden room designer and a client.
Rustic Realities' clients aimed to create a Pilates and fitness studio within their garden, doubling as an additional family area. The client had a distinct vision for the studio space, encompassing its functionality, style, and finishes.
Operating across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire, Rustic Realities brought this vision to life.
6m x 3.5m Garden Pilates Studio
Initial design discussions led to the design of a 6m x 3.5m structure, complemented by a 1.2m deep covered veranda along the front. Lee from Rustic Realities creates a 3D model for each project, allowing clients to explore the building virtually before finalising the design. As showcased by these model images, the representation closely matches the final construction.
A Contemporary Design with Rustic Elements
Rustic Realities' signature approach melds contemporary garden room designs with rustic details. For this project, they've achieved this blend through the exterior cladding.
Lee combined black cladding with natural Thermowood battens. Thermowood, a highly durable softwood cladding treated at high temperatures, alters the fibres for increased durability, boasting a decades-long, low-maintenance lifespan.
Lee explains, "Externally, the building is clad in Thermowood battens with a shadow gap, giving it a more rustic, organic feel compared to cedar or larch battens.”
These shadow gaps lend the walls depth and interest beyond typical tongue-and-groove finishes. As the photos demonstrate, Rustic Realities' on-site team meticulously detailed the battens to align with the ground's contours.

The soffit detail of the veranda roof canopy, finished in slatted cladding, adds charm. Evolving during construction, the client requested a bench swing in this area to enjoy the garden views.
Wide French doors with side windows create a welcoming entrance, while a 2m high corner window enhances natural light and adds architectural interest.
Hardwood Plywood Interior Walls
Inside, the client chose hardwood ply walls and a plastered ceiling, marrying the studio's contemporary style with a cabin's rustic ambience.
For its primary use as a Pilates and fitness studio, large mirrors were installed on one wall, and ceiling anchors were added for suspension trainers.
Black glass heaters and matt black electrical fittings were client-specified to align with their envisioned aesthetic, complemented by an LED strip around the top of the wall.
