Our friends over at Millworks who supply timber cladding to several garden room suppliers have been telling us about a new product they are using to create consistent cladding weathering.
The thing with the timber claddings used in garden room design, such as cedar, larch, and Thermowood. As they age, if left unprotected they will weather to a silver grey colour. The thing is this change in colour can be inconsistent depending on the exposure of the wood. A new Swedish timber treatment called OrganoWood will ensure that this weathering is consistent across all elevations, which at the end of the day will create a more attractive building.
Some people want the silver look from day one
Over the years we have had lots of emails from garden room buyers who are looking to create the weathered silver grey cladding look from day one. This has been difficult to achieve as the change in colour happens once the wood is exposed to the elements. Depending on where you live it could take a couple of years to achieve the look you want.
The great thing with OrganoWood is that you can speed up this weathered look. Millworks kindly sent use some images to show you the difference in colour an application of the OrganoWood system can instantly make:

This last pair of photos looks at the difference when applying OrganoWood to Thermowood. Thermowood is a popular finish on many entry level garden rooms:
Protection against fire & fungal attack
Not only does OrganoWood create consistent weathering on timber cladding. It also acts as a fire retardant and protects the cladding from fungal attack.
Applying OrganoWood to cladding
OrganoWood can be applied to cladding once on site. You need to apply it to all the elevations to create the consistent look. Application is a multi step process, as Millworks tell us:
1 coat of OrganoWood 01 Protector
2 coast of OrganoWood 02 Repellent
Protection will last up to 5 years. There is a cleaner available called OrganoWood 03 Cleaner.
Next steps
If you are looking to ensure a consistent look as your timber cladding ages, or want to create an aged silvery grey look from day one. Talk to your garden room supplier about applying OrganoWood. It will probably involve and extra cost to cover the materials and the labour applying it.
