Garden rooms are not only spaces for the able-bodied, we can vouch for this being a disabled garden room user. Garden room designers can adapt their designs to make them fully accessible from getting into the building to the day to day usability inside the room.
A fine example of a garden room that has been designed for an owner who has a disability is this artist’s studio by Swift Garden Rooms. While the building has been designed with the lady’s needs in mind, each functional element has been designed so that it doesn’t stand out. After all, as we know, because you need a helping hand doesn’t mean you want it to be evident!
Swift Garden Rooms designed this 6 meter by 4 meter garden room to be an artist’s studio that is accessible all year round. To make accessing the garden room easy, the Swift team created a ramp leading to the entrance. This has been decked to look like the decked verandas so commonly seen along the front of a contemporary style garden rooms. We like how this practical element does not look out of place and creates a defined journey to the room, which many able-bodied owners could copy!
The Swift team have incorporated a large set of sliding doors into the front elevation of the room. These doors have a low threshold so that the owner can just wheel off the decked area into the room. A little specification choice that makes a big difference.
Garden room designers can also ensure that electrical sockets and light switches are positioned at a height that they can easily be accessed from a wheelchair.
Natural light is important when a room is being for art. As well as the large set of sliding the doors, the Swift team have also incorporated a sun tube in the roof which will bounce natural light into the room. As you can see this, coupled with the white interior bounces light around.
Swift Garden Rooms offer a turnkey package for clients. This means that they will handle all the steps involved from any planning application via the groundworks and installation of the building, to the handing over of the keys. This means you just sit back and watch your new room take shape.
Swift’s client is clearly happy with their new room:
Heaven has a new home for Juliet tonight. A lifetime’s ambition fulfilled with huge help and expertise from Swift Garden Rooms and Extensions: an art studio, of her own, in her back garden in Henley. The new decking, also, opens up our garden to her on a whole new level. I had to call her in for supper earlier! She was just sat out there on her own after we toasted it. The three builders were absolutely fantastic and more than worthy of a team photo at the end” – (GB Henley on Thames).
