Swift Garden Rooms were recently asked by landscape designer Anne Rhodes Davies to design a poolside studio as a key part of one of her garden designs. Swift was commissioned to design a building that could be used as a relaxation space and a room to entertain; it also needed to double up as a changing area for the swimming pool.
It was decided that a curved roofline would make this garden room stand out. Swift build their garden rooms with SIPS panels. The designers have taken these highly insulated panels and had them cut to create the gentle curve while maintaining the insulative and structural integrity of the panels. The curve looks good externally, but we particularly like how the curved ceiling is detailed inside the room with tongue & groove boards.
The exterior of the building has been clad in Western Red Cedar tongue & groove boards. The boards have been fixed horizontally to enhance the lines of the curved roofline. A glazed corner has been created by mixing together doors and fixed panel floor to ceiling glazing. The glazed corner has been recessed from the front edge of the wall creating a nice canopy detail. Exterior grade LED downlights have been recessed into this canopy detail which will create a nice curtain of light in front of the glazing.
The building sits on a footprint of 6 meters by 3.65 meters, creating ample space for the multiple intended uses. A kitchenette has been created in one corner; the Swift team installed the cabinets that the customer chose. The inclusion of this well-equipped kitchenette will enable the owners to entertain in style.
The room will be used as a changing area. A bespoke drying cupboard has been created in one corner, ideal for towels and drying wet costumes. There is a light in the cupboard controlled by the opening and closing of the door. A heater and ventilation have also been incorporated.
An air conditioning system has been installed for easy control of the temperature throughout the year. The electrical system includes a spur point for a sauna which may be incorporated at a later date.
The Swift team completed this project in just two weeks on-site. A similar building without the kitchenette, air conditioning and bespoke drying cupboard would cost around £35,520 including VAT.
