An artists studio has long been a popular use for garden rooms. Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur or a professional artist, they are the perfect place to practice your craft, with the knowledge you can walk away, and everything will be just as you left it when you return.
Garden room designers work closely with you to design a studio around the specific needs of your craft. For instance, over the years, we have featured buildings that are taller than usual to accommodate large canvases. We also often see design features like windows on the north elevation. Generally, this would be avoided in garden room design, but some artists prefer northern light.
This recent project by Executive Garden Rooms is an excellent example of a tailor-made garden artists studio. The building is 5.4m x 3.9m externally.
A large set of bi-fold doors create a wall of floor to ceiling glazing — the doors folding back to open the studio up to the garden.
Interestingly, an electronic blind has been fitted over the door opening. This can be dropped to soften bright light and stop flies entering the studio. This is a clever design trick that we haven't seen used before in conjunction with bi-fold doors. How lovely to work with the doors fully open, yet be able to diffuse the light entering the room.
A sink with spray tap
A key feature of this studio is the storage that has been incorporated into the studio. Cupboards and large draws are ideal for storing art materials and equipment.
Executive Garden Rooms offer one of the best insulation specifications in the industry. This, coupled with specialist membranes, will ensure all the art materials are stored in tip-top condition. There is no fear of materials becoming damp and musty.
The run of grey units includes a sink for washing brushes. The sink has been fitted with a spray tap. Hot water will be available on-demand thanks to the 15 litre under sink heater.
Executive Garden Rooms handle the connections to the mains supplies for the water and electrics as part of their all in service.
Air conditioning to control the temperature all year round
The studio has been fitted with an air conditioning system which offers both cooling and heating. The system chosen is equipped with wifi and can be controlled remotely by a smartphone app. The system has also been fitted with a movement sensor and will power down if the room is left unattended for a while.
Mix of external cladding
Externally, the studio has a crisp contemporary style. The high spec aluminium bi-fold doors & windows are powder coated in an Anthracite grey colour. They contrast sharply with the rendered walls.
The soffits, fascia and rear wall, have been clad in a light stone coloured Cedral boarding. The render has been painted in a stone colour to match the Cedral. The combination of these finishes creating a smart, low maintenance finish.
The Executive Garden Rooms team completed the project and left it ready to move straight into. The installation team were on-site for three weeks.
