A successful hairdressing couple from Cheshire, approached the Swift Garden Rooms team to create another salon in their garden. They wanted to create a modern space that could house two more cutting stations, in their garden.
As bespoke designers, the Swift team held initial meetings with their clients to understand their vision and how they work. These meetings are invaluable and the starting point for the design process. With a clear understanding of the brief, the Swift team designed a 5.3m x 3.25m garden room – a precise measurement to make use of the space available.
The rectangular building has a cloakroom with w.c. in one corner. The plumbing has been extended into the main room for the installation of a back basin for hair washing. Two cutting stations have been positioned on the rear wall. As you can see from these photos, even with these fixtures, the salon has a spacious feel.
It will be easy to maintain the temperature in the salon, throughout the year as a Mitsubishi climate control system has been fitted.
Swift’s customers wanted to create a contemporary building and chose a ‘hit and miss’ cladding for the external finish. This finish is also known as rainscreen or open board cladding. A specialist membrane is fitted under the cladding to protect the core structure from the ingress of moisture. This membrane allows the timber cladding to have gaps between the boards. Not many garden room companies offer this finish, but it’s worth considering as it does create a stylish building.
Larch cladding was chosen for the exterior of the salon. Larch is a popular alternative to Cedar cladding. It has similar durability and can be left to weather without long-term maintenance. Another plus is that it is often more cost-effective than Cedar.
Floor to ceiling glazing wraps around one corner of the salon. This is made up of a large set of sliding doors on the front wall and a fixed window on the side wall. Integrated blinds were chosen as a sleek way of controlling light. These blinds sit discreetly between the glass in the double glazed windows.
