Garden rooms are not limited to one specific use, such as a home office. They can be designed as spaces for the whole family to enjoy, either together or separately.
This great project by Kent based Ark Design Build is an excellent example of a garden room designed for all the family. It will act as a family television and games room at times. A teenagers den sometimes, and a space where the adults can escape to as a retreat from daily life.
This multifunctional family room has an interesting layout, a twist on an L-shape configuration. The overall footprint of this garden room is just under 30 sqm.
The large main room has two smaller rooms running off it. We are enjoying the detailing around the bi-fold doors. It is interesting how the Ark team have brought this wall forward, allowing them to add a window on the side wall, creating a wraparound glazing effect.
Garden room with shower room
There will be no having to return to the hare to when you need to use the loo, thanks to the inclusion of a shower room. The well-specified shower room sits in one 'wing' leading off the main room.
As part of their turnkey service, Ark Design Build fitted out the shower room right down to the hanging of the plants. This service included the groundworks needed to connect the shower room to the mains supplies for water and waste. Not all garden room companies who offer toilets or shower room, include this hookup in their costs, leaving you with a job to organise with another company. Useful storage room
The 'wing' at the front of the building, houses a useful storage room. Rather than a plastered and decorated finish as used in the main room and shower room. The storage area has been lined with OSB. OSB is a practical and highly durable finish ideal for storage areas like this.
The Ark team have kitted out the storage room with shelving to suit their customer's needs.
Sliding feature window
Behind the garden room, there is an area of raised garden. So this could be enjoyed, the Ark Design Build team designed in a feature window.
The feature window utilises a sliding window system. This is not a configuration you see used very often in garden room design, which is a shame as they are an excellent choice!
Like sliding doors, with a sliding window, you have two or more panels which can be slid to one side to open up a large expanse of glazing. Sliding windows add a WOW factor moment to a room.
Completed down to the final touches
The Ark Design Build team want to leave you with a room that you can start using immediately, as they leave the site. To this end, the Ark team will take the time to hang TV's and shelves for you. With this project, these finishing touches included hanging the feature wallpaper and fitting the wood burner in the main room, and hanging plants in the shower room. We can't think of many other companies who go to these lengths.
