The concept for this fantastic space was initially to be a place to relax and watch tv and movies on a big screen. As our lives changed with lockdown, it morphed into serving as a home office too, as its owner started working from home.
Kent based Ark Design Build, designed and built the 4.8m x 4.8m garden room. As with all Ark Design Build's work, this a bespoke design, tailored to the customers wants and site needs.
In this case, the site threw up some challenges. To maximise the chosen plot, one wall needed to be angled to follow the boundary lines. If a standard square or rectangular garden room had been used, there would have been a dead area of space between the building and boundary line.
As bespoke designers, Ark Design Build design each garden room from scratch, so were able to design a building with an angled intersection between the left-hand wall and rear wall. This has not compromised the space inside the room, especially as the Ark team built a bespoke desk for the area.
We are loving the arrangement of narrow windows over the desk. The horizontal and vertical windows give glimpses of the area behind the room, and ensure the back room is naturally light.
Because of the fitted furniture, the office area does not impose on the relaxation space. A sofa has been positioned on one side of the bi-fold doors facing the longest wall, onto which films and tv shows are projected. The high spec plastered and decorated finish is ideal for projecting onto, negating the need for a screen.
Black Thermowood cladding
A key feature of this garden room is its black external finish. The Ark Design Build team have used highly durable Thermorood cladding, painted black as the external finish. The painted cladding has been colour matched with high-spec aluminium door and window frames. The combination is striking in its simplicity.
