As well as building garden rooms sited at the bottom of a homeowners garden, many of the companies we feature, also design and build school classrooms. The modular nature of a garden room building lends itself to classroom design as the building can be tailored to the school’s specific needs, and built very quickly. In many cases, modular classroom buildings are built during the school holidays for minimal disruption.
Sanctum Garden Studios were asked by a nursery school in Leigh, Lancashire to create a new classroom ready for the new intake of pupils in September. To maximise both the space available and the size of the classroom an L-shaped building was decided upon.
Sanctum Garden Studios don’t offer a standard L-shaped garden room, so they created a bespoke design for the school, based on the style & specification of their popular Contemporary Range. The building they created sits on a footprint of 6.5 meters by 5.7 meters by 2.4 meters.
As its name suggests, the Contemporary Range has a clean, minimal look, with the choice of a cubist roofline enhancing this.
Were this an L-shaped garden room in a garden setting, large expanses of glass would typically be installed into each of the wings. But with this being a classroom building a different configuration was needed. On one wing a large section of glazing has been created, unusually with a single glazed door in the centre with fixed glazed panels on either side.
On the front elevation of the second wing, a wide window has been positioned. This window has opening fanlights at the top, allowing the teachers to open them for ventilation easily, but they are out of reach for their small charges. Smaller, top opening windows have been created in each end wall, so the room is flooded with natural light throughout the day.
Internally the Contemporary range has a durable, easy to maintain finish. Laminate floor is used on the floor, and the walls are a practical melamine board. There is the option to upgrade the Contemporary Range to a fully plastered and decorated finish.
This substantial building was built in just three days on-site which is impressive. As you can see from these photos, the new classroom is ready for pupils in September.
