Executive Garden Rooms have a track record of transforming the site where an old garage once sat into a modern garden room designed for comfortable year-round use. Last year, we featured a project where they had taken down a garage and built a contemporary family room complete with a shower room.
They have recently completed a similar transformation in Swanage, replacing a 1930's garage with a spacious garden office that includes a useful storage room.
Dismantling the garage
Where many garden room companies insist on a clear site before they arrive to start work, Executive Garden Rooms handle the whole project from ground clearance right through to the final decoration and electrical hook-up.
This project in Swanage started with the Executive team dismantling the garage. The outdoor office building they have replaced it with sits on a footprint of 6.2m x 3.5m.
Outdoor office with hidden storage
The building has been divided into two rooms. The main room will be used as a home office and features a lovely glazed corner that will focus the view out into the newly landscaped garden.
To the right of the office space, a discreet storage room has been created. This storage area is accessed through a single, grey panel door on the right elevation.
Wired for comfort and connectivity
Executive Garden Rooms offer a well-specified electrical package that is tailored to each customer's requirements. Standard features include LED lighting, plenty of power sockets, and a smoke detector.
The Executive Garden Rooms electricians ran Cat6 data cabling from the main house for a reliable internet connection in the office. Some companies offer plug-in solutions which carry the internet connections via the electrical circuit. These plug-in solutions are easy and cost-effective but don't offer the same reliability and connection stability as the type of Cat6 cabling that Executive Garden Rooms offer.
For year-round comfort, Executive Garden Rooms clients chose the option of installing an air conditioning system. The Executive team installed a Daikin air conditioning system. The unit has wi-fi connectivity, so the owners can control it remotely via their smartphone. For instance, they could set the system to cool the room down on a hot day before they arrive for work.
UV-protected Cedar cladding
Executive Garden Rooms clients chose Western Red Cedar for the exterior cladding. To help maintain the natural reddish-brown colouring of the Cedar, a UV-oil was applied before the boards were installed. Without UV protection, the Cedar cladding would weather to a silvery grey.
The rear wall of the building has been clad with Cedral, a cement fibre board that comes in a range of colours. Cedral is perfect for hidden or inaccessible walls because it won't rot or lose its colour, so it doesn't require regular maintenance.
Two and a half week transformation
The Executive Garden Rooms transformed an old garage into a modern office space in just 2.5 weeks, which is impressive.
Customer feedback
Executive Garden Rooms clients are justifiably delighted with their new building, leaving the following review:
"We would highly recommend Executive Garden Rooms to anyone who has considered building a garden office but doesn't know where to begin.
EGR were highly professional from the initial consultation. Alison took time to fully understand our needs and responded to any questions quickly and efficiently, while John ensured the groundwork and construction were well organised with minimal disruption.
From start to finish the project ran like clockwork, and we were kept informed at all stages of the design and build process. There were no hidden costs and the turnkey approach meant that we didn't have the pressure of trying to identify and coordinate multiple contractors for the different aspects of the project. John, Paul and Gavin worked tirelessly to ensure they adhered to the agreed schedule, and the quality and finish of the build are outstanding.
We can't thank the team enough for replacing our obsolete garage with a wonderful office space in under 2.5 weeks!"
