If you explore our archive of self-contained granny annexe buildings, you will see the vast majority of them have shallow mono-pitch roofs.
Specialist companies like Annexe Spaces also offer the option of a dual pitched roofline. A granny annexe with a pitched roofline creates a building with a lot of character externally, but as you move inside you'll be hit by the WOW factor of the vaulted ceilings, and the light and airy feeling the interior space has.
This recent project by Annexe Spaces is a great example. At 31.2sqm it is a reasonably compact annexe, but because of the high ceilings, the space does not feel small. It was designed so a gentleman could live with his family while retaining his own space and independence.
Annexe Spaces offer a bespoke design service, so they will work with you closely on the layout and size of the rooms, so that the space works for your specific needs. They also offer a turnkey service whereby they handle the whole project from the initial design right through to the final decoration. Unlike some companies, Annexe Spaces service includes all the groundworks needed for the plumbing and electrics and the final connections to the mains supply.
Annexe Spaces project managed service includes the planning approval process and having the various stages of the build signed off by Building Control.
Garden Cottage
Externally, the annexe has a feel of a country cottage. The exterior of the building has been rendered — the shade of cream chosen to match in with an existing garden building. Dark grey doors, windows and trims add a sharp contemporary twist.
The roof has been tiled with Metrotiles. They are a highly durable finish, with a maintenance-free lifespan of several decades.
The tiles, coupled with the render and uPVC door & window frames, means the family don't need to think about maintenance to ensure their building stays looking good.
One bedroom garden home
The annexe has an overall footprint of 8.37m x 4.39m. At its highest point, the ridge of the building is 3.5m high.
The accommodation has been arranged to create a spacious living room with a well-equipped kitchen running along the rear wall. The combination of doors opening out onto the garden, coupled with the vaulted ceiling gives the room a spacious feel. A door leads off this main room into the bedroom. Like the living room, the bedroom has views of the family garden — an en-suite shower room leads off her bedroom.
A tidy build
It is always interesting to see photos of a project during the construction phase. Not only do they give us insight into the layers of the build, but they also give us a clue as to how tidy the installation team are while they are on-site!

The Annexe Spaces team pride themselves on preparing for and maintaining a tidy site throughout the build. As we can see from these images, they live up to their promise, tidying up as they go. This is reassuring to see.
This annexe is going to create a comfortable home for the gentleman. Allowing him to maintain his independence, yet close enough to be part of daily family life.
