Over the years, we have been asked many times about converting a garage into a bedroom. While it is possible it will take quite a lot of work to incorporate the different layers into a garage to make it suitable to act as a bedroom.
Another option is to take down the garage and replace it with a purpose-built timber-framed bedroom.
When creating an outbuilding that is going to be used for sleeping in, it needs to comply with Building Regulations. This will ensure that the room is insulated enough to use all year round and incorporates specialist layers to protect against the spread of fire.
Garden bedroom sitting on the footprint of a garage
Outside In Garden Rooms who specialise in contemporary style garden rooms in Scotland, were commissioned to replace an old garage with an ensuite bedroom that could be used for granny to stay.
The garage was dismantled, and with the concrete slab still being in good condition, it was decided that this could be used as the foundation for the room.
The new building was manufactured in the Outside In Garden Rooms workshops. It was then delivered to the site in kit form for quick assembly.
The same size as the old garage, the new room has been divided to create the main bedroom area with ensuite fitted with a toilet and washbasin. The addition of the ensuite makes the garden bedroom self-contained from the main house.
Designed to maximise light
The area of the garden where the bedroom sits is shady. Wanting to let as much natural light into the new room as possible, the Outside In team incorporated lots of glazing into the design.
This included adding two Velux roof windows. Adding top light like this is a clever design trick as it floods the room with light without overlooking neighbours.
We also like how an opening picture window has framed a view into the heart of the garden.
Outside In Garden Rooms customer comments:
Our garden room is situated in the shade of the main house so it was important to use any opportunity to let in as much natural light as possible. Mel helped us pick the perfect size and location for 2 velux windows that flood both areas of the garden room with light but don't impede our privacy. We are really happy with the result, a wonderful, light space that is a pleasure to be in.
The workmanship is excellent and gazing out on it from our kitchen is a pleasure (much easier on the eye than previous garage).
Overall it is a perfect place for Granny to come and spend more time with us but allowing her some independence too.
