We recently explored the work of Rockwood Garden Studios, who offer a bespoke design service and utilise a unique palette of exterior materials to create stylish, low-maintenance garden rooms. One of their specialist areas is incorporating soundproofing into their designs and they have created studios for professional musicians, music producers, as well as practice spaces for musicians of all kinds.
The journey towards a soundproof Rockwood Garden Studio starts with a free, no-obligation design consultation. During this visit, they will discuss with you the acoustic elements they can incorporate into the studio and identify the level of soundproofing you are looking to achieve.
Rockwood Garden Studios encourages customers to visit one of their previous acoustic studio projects to experience the difference that their soundproofing techniques make to the transmission of noise.
In the meantime, take a look at this video where the Rockwood Garden Studios team measure the sound levels inside and outside the studio. It is impressive to witness and, in addition, you will get a feel for the interior space that can be created.
This acoustic studio by Rockwood Garden Studios has a high acoustic specification featuring a ‘room within a room’ build-up. With this specification, a second framework is built inside the garden studio's core structure. This second framework is decoupled from the main framework, effectively building one room inside another. With the walls and ceiling decoupled from the main structure like this, sound transmission is significantly reduced.
A Range of Soundproofing Measures Can Be Incorporated into a Rockwood Garden Studio
From the foundation upwards, Rockwood Garden Studios are able to incorporate several layers of acoustic insulation into their already well-specified garden rooms.
When being used as a soundproof studio, Rockwood Garden Studios recommends a solid concrete slab foundation as this helps minimise sound leakage compared with the spaced pile foundation systems that are commonly used in garden room design.
They can fit Rockwool insulation into their traditional timber frames. Rockwool is pliable so they can ensure that it fits snugly into the corners to minimise sound leakage. They can also fit two layers of soundbloc plasterboard to line the interior space.
Externally, Rockwood Garden Studios finish their buildings with stone cladding. This dense stone material offers better acoustic properties as part of a multi-layer build-up than timber claddings do.
These options can be used on their own or coupled with the ‘room within a room’ system that is shown in the photos and video on this page.
Two Sets of Doors and Windows
Glazing is the most vulnerable point in a soundproof garden room, and it is a balancing act to achieve the desired soundproofing levels while offering a view, allowing natural light in, and creating easy ventilation.
As a solution, Rockwood Garden Studios are able to fit double skin doors and windows. With this system, two sets of doors - in this case, French doors are fitted one behind the other with a sealed vestibule between. These photos of the doors and the window in the kitchen area clearly showcase this detail.
Rockwood Garden Studios utilise laminated acoustic glass in their doors and windows.
Complete with Kitchen and Cloakroom
As well as customising the acoustic specification around your requirements, Rockwood Garden Studios can also design the building's size and layout around you. In this case, their client chose to incorporate a kitchen and cloakroom into their building, meaning they can comfortably spend the day in their studio without having to return to the house for drinks etc.
As part of their turnkey service, Rockwood Garden Studios handled the connections to the mains services so the studio space was ready to move into as the Rockwood team left the site.
As we can see, a comfortable yet professional workspace has been created.
