We tend to feature garden annexes as they are completed, and before they are furnished, so it is always interesting to see an annexe once it has been lived in for a while. We first featured this self-contained garden annexe by Executive Garden Rooms two and a half years ago, when it was newly built.
Often when we write about garden annexes, we refer to them as granny annexes as they are being built in a child’s garden for an elderly relative. In this case, it was the other way around with the annexe being built in the parents garden for their child to live in.
The spacious annexe has enabled an elderly couple to stay living in their home while their children live in a modern house in the garden and are on hand to help with care and to chauffer the parents to doctors appointments etc.
This is one of the biggest garden annexes we have featured on the site at 72 square meters. Each room in the one bedroom home has the feeling of space, this is certainly not compact living!
The highly insulated annexe is a comfortable place to live, the building features a central heating system run by LPG gas which makes maintaining a comfortable temperature easy and is cost effective to run.
The Cedar cladding is starting to weather
Three sides of the annexe were clad in Western Red Cedar cladding. This is a popular option for garden room buyers. The thing is that depending on its exposure the weathering process can be patchy and stained areas can even occur. As you can see after just two and a half years, the cladding has really started to change appearance. Even in this state the Cedar cladding is still durable and offering protection to the core structure, it’s just a visual change that many buyers don’t consider.
The fourth elevation of this building was clad in Cedral boards. This material was chosen for the rear wall as the building was 1 meter from the boundary line, so to comply with Building Regulations a product with a low fire rating like Cedral had to be used.
In fact, Executive Garden Rooms choice of Cedral boarding has become so popular with their customers that they have now largely moved away from using Cedar cladding. Customers like the Cedral because it is low maintenance and comes in a range of popular colours, that doesn’t need repainting to maintain its appearance.
It is great to look around this annexe again and see how it is making life easier for a family. Executive Garden Rooms have made quite a name for themselves in the granny annexe market, here are a few more examples of their self-contained homes in the garden:
- Spacious granny annexe
